Chopping a top has got to be one of the most popular and common body modifications in the hot rod and custom car hobby. Unfortunately, even though it's considered the international sign of a "real" hot rod, it's not the kind of task that the average rodder would normally attempt (though most of us would love to be able to master the art). That said, we're always happy to read an article about, or better yet watch, a pro plying his trade. Well, recently we were lucky enough to get our hands on a slew of images of the process being carried out on a '37 Chevy coupe by Alloway's Hot Rod Shop, and we just couldn't wait to share them with you.
The Chevy in question has been (and is in the process of being) treated to a whole array of body mods by the crew, and this particular chop was planned and executed to be subtle rather than radical. Oftentimes all a vehicle needs is a bit of creative tweaking top-wise in order to accentuate other body modification and complete the look the builder is after. After all, we've all succumbed to the more-is-better school of thought at one time or another, but when it comes to chopping a top, that method, more often than not, ends up ruining the look of a car rather than enhancing it. That said, let's take a look at how a pro shop makes a nice car an awesome car just by taking a little off the top.
